Main metropolis of the Hauts-de-France region, Lille is a city of history in the heart of French Flanders. A crossroads of Europe and a prime tourist destination, the prefecture is both a business center and a cultural capital that attracts a cosmopolitan population. The main hub of a conurbation of more than 1 million inhabitants, which also includes the cities of Roubaix and Tourcoing, the metropolis of Lille is the fourth largest in France.

A historic city center with a crazy charm

Le Vieux-Lille is a real magnet for all lovers of conviviality and old stones. This historic district has a first-rate heritage that reflects the exuberance and opulence of 17th century Flemish architecture. The heart of this district is undoubtedly its famous Grand'Place, overlooked by one of the most beautiful buildings in Lille: the Vieille Bourse. The other iconic figure of the city is the Belfry of the City Hall, whose ascent offers a breathtaking view of the Lille metropolis.

The charm of the Old City also comes from its network of canals that have structured Lille's urban planning since the 15th century. Gradually put back in water, they remind us that Lille was once an island built on the Deûle.

Monuments to be discovered at all costs

To get a first glimpse of Lille and its must-see monuments, there is nothing like a short walk between its three mythical squares: Grand Place, Place du Théâtre and Place Rihour. This 1.8 km walk allows you to discover emblematic buildings such as the Vieille Bourse, the Rang de Beauregard, the Opera, the Palais Rihour or the belfry of the Chamber of Commerce.

Also take the time to browse the rooms of the Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille to discover a rich collection of masterpieces dating from prehistory to the 21st century. Do you prefer today's culture? Go to the Gare Saint Sauveur. This rehabilitated former train station is the center of Lille's contemporary art scene and houses exhibition spaces, a concert hall, a cinema as well as bars and restaurants.

The green lung of downtown Lille, the Parc de la Citadelle also offers beautiful things to discover along the alleys of this public garden laid out around the fortifications. Don't miss the Napoleon Bridge, the Vauban garden as well as its incredible war memorial dedicated to the carrier pigeons who died for their country during the First World War.
