Located on the Atlantic coast in the Basque Country, Biarritz is one of the most attractive French seaside resorts in Europe. It enjoys an exceptional location in the heart of the Bay of Biscay.

A particularly well-preserved coastline

One of the town's main attractions is the Virgin Rock. Drilled under Napoleon III, this rock served as a port of refuge. It is topped by crosses and a statue of the Virgin Mary which was erected in 1865. It can be reached in good weather via a metal footbridge. From the rock, visitors will discover a breathtaking view of the Bay of Biscay. Along the beaches of Biarritz (Grande Plage, Plage du Port Vieux, Plage Marbella, Plage de Milady), one can appreciate the beauty of the coastline and the rocks so feared by sailors in bad weather.

A very eclectic architecture

Biarritz has passed through the ages and the architecture of its buildings and monuments bears witness to its past. In the Middle Ages, when Aquitaine was under English rule, the town's activity was based on whaling. On the heights of Alataye, the ruins of a fortified castle, Fort Ferragus, built in the 13th century, can still be seen. Forgotten for a few hundred years, it was in the 19th century, particularly under Napoleon III, that the town became one of the favourite holiday destinations of French and European high society. Today, its large villas in the late renaissance style, such as the Villa Eugenie, are the pride of the town.
