Discover Nîmes, city of art and history

Prefecture of the Gard in Occitania, the city of Nîmes has been rooted for two millennia between the Mediterranean Sea and the Cévennes mountains. Visiting the city allows you to discover the heritage of Roman antiquity by discovering its magnificent buildings, which are still surprisingly not on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Nîmes through its history

Discovering the city of Nîmes gives you a very good idea of what a city might have looked like in ancient Roman times. Indeed, the city has more than 2000 years of history. Its most precious heritage is its magnificent arena. The amphitheatre is perfectly preserved. It is used for the férias and the music festival. The bullring has become the emblem of the city. The ruins of the Castellum Aquae show the ingenuity of the Romans in their mastery of the water system that supplied the city at the time. Moreover, about twenty minutes by car from Nîmes, you can go and admire the famous Pont du Gard, which is in an impressive state of preservation. The Porte d'auguste and the Porte de France are the only two gates still visible from the city's great wall, which opened onto the Via Domitia.

A pleasant city to visit

In the gardens of the fountain, you can enjoy a moment of relaxation and stroll with your partner, friends or family. Here again, the treasures of the past are to be found with the Temple of Diana and the Tour Magne. With its 18th century architecture, it is one of the most remarkable parks in France. Walking through the streets of the city, you will admire the architecture of the house, the Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Castor cathedral, the Saint-Baudile de Nîmes church, the clock tower or the Sainte-Perpétue church. The Bois des Espeisses is also a pleasant place for hiking and cycling enthusiasts.

Enthusiasts will find the Musée de la Romanité, inaugurated in 2018, with its impressive façade. It is dedicated to Roman antiquity and contains treasures of inestimable value. The museum also has the advantage of immersing you in the history of the city using new technologies. On the roof, you can enjoy the view of the city. You can also discover the fine arts museum and the railway museum.

The area around Nîmes is full of beautiful villages (especially if you go as far as Arles and Avignon) and well-preserved natural landscapes, both in the Cévennes National Park and on the Mediterranean coast.
