Located between Vierzon and Nevers, the city of Bourges is the prefecture of the department of Cher, in the region Centre-Val de Loire. Capital of the ancient province of Berry, it is crossed by the Yèvre and the Voiselle. Today, one can still admire the vestiges of its past through the visit of classified sites.

From Gallo-Roman origins to the Middle Ages

The Gallo-Roman origins of Bourges can be found in the old city walls at the level of the town hall. During the Roman period, the city had reached a certain size. Nevertheless, during the Middle Ages, the city withdrew behind its ramparts. It is from the Gothic period that the city takes back the size at the end of the XIIth century in particular with the setting in building of the cathedral Saint-Étienne de Bourges. A true masterpiece of Gothic architecture, it is currently listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Jacques Coeur palace, named after a former silversmith ennobled by King Charles VII, is also a remarkable building for its 15th century façade in the flamboyant Gothic style.

City of art and heritage

Visitors will discover many museums in Bourges. Starting with the Musée du Berry, whose collection is housed in the Hôtel Cujas. One can also see the Estève museum as well as the museum of decorative art. The latter is located in the heart of the medieval center of the city, in a magnificent half-timbered house.
