Angers is the prefecture of Maine-et-Loire and the most populated city in the Pays de la Loire region after Nantes Its historical and cultural heritage makes it a place not to be missed and has earned it the label of city of art and history.

A medieval city

The history of Angers goes back to the 5th century A.D. at the time of the Celts, but it is in the Middle Ages that the city develops to know its golden age in the 14th century when the county is erected in duchy of Anjou. The city has preserved its medieval heritage. This is the case of its magnificent castle which was built by Saint-Louis in the 13th century. Its perfect state of preservation makes it one of the most visited buildings in the region. The Cathedral of Saint-Maurice of Angers is also a remarkable building, because its construction began in the 12th century. The architectural style is a mixture of Romanesque and Gothic art.
